David Porteous-Butler:

David was born in North London in 1945 but settled in Suffolk in 1978 and is now to be found in his studio deep in the rural heart of the county, diligently and passionately losing himself amongst his canvases and sculptures.

David learned his craft under the tutelage of the late Sir Kyffin Williams RA, Anthony Kerr and Anthony Green RA. Despite his obvious talents he delayed his launch into the art world until he'd paid his dues to a ‘proper job' and became a very successful fashion designer. This heightened his awareness of shape and form before he returned to his true vocation as a painter and sculptor.

Like the late Sir Kyffin, the man he considers his mentor, he has a passion for the vitality of the landscape and the changing light around him. Suffolk provides much inspiration. Working usually with a limited palette, and most often with palette knives, he is always faithful to the truth in what he sees.

His integrity is evident in a commitment to portray the energy and life of his
subject without compromising or corrupting its reality for the sake of convenience.
His experience in creating the work therefore lives large in the finished piece and to enjoy his work is to share, at least a little, in the pleasure of its creation. In short his work, like the man himself, never stands still. In his landscapes and seascapes he sucessfully captures the vitality of the environment around him.

Suffolk is a constant source of inspiration to David, where he has lived for almost 30 years. It is little wonder that David is now enjoying considerable success as an artist.

He has a strong following and his work is to be found in collections around the world.
In recent years he has exhibited extensively in the UK and is to be found in many galleries in Suffolk and beyond.

His continuing success is assured - demand for his work is growing still further, and he is certainly one to look out for. To see more of David's work, click here.
