Jane Lewis BA Hons:
Jane graduated with a joint honours degree in Fine Art and English from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1973.
After teaching Fine Art for a short period she pursued a successful career in publishing in London before settling in Suffolk in 1987. Ten years ago she returned full time to her true passion and began creating her stunning canvases with the swathes of colour and texture that so expressively capture the elements around her.
Her success was assured. She has exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Mall Galleries, and the Llewellyn Alexander among other London galleries, as well as many prominent East Anglian Galleries closer to home. Her work is in many collections here and overseas.
She continues to find inspiration in the landscapes and seascapes that surround her. Jane makes many outdoor forays in all weathers and captures mental snapshots of the form and light of the Suffolk countryside. She then returns to her studio and quickly and accurately produces sketches that set down a guide for her to work with later.
Armed with these sketches and her vivid mental recall, her canvases begin to take shape. She manipulates oils, moving them quickly and freely around her canvas, combining the figurative and the abstract. Light, space, colour and form vie to find their respective places in each work. Her work has been described as being 'largely about colour and line' and certainly her liberated way of working brings vigour to every piece. Ultimately however, they are shaped by her own sketches which refer directly back to the landscape itself.
The result is a vivid, energetic expression of light and form, held in place and given shape by the discipline found in her drawing skills. The work remains ultimately true to its subject as a real evocation of Suffolk with all its inherent beauty and mystery.
Jane is particularly influenced by the works of Matisse, Rothko, Bomberg, Auerbech and Diebenkorn but her style is her own.
Her works are true originals and, as many collectors have already found, truly to delight in.
